NP preceptors and clinical sites in the San Gabriel Valley

APU's campus, the Monrovia site and the people around them

APU's main campus sits at 901 E. Alosta Ave. in Azusa, about 26 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains foothills. APU lists Azusa as one of three locations for its MSN with NP Specialties, with the Inland Empire and San Diego, and lists its School Nurse Services Credential options at Azusa alone.

The Monrovia Regional Site, at 606 E. Huntington Dr., hosts nursing bachelor's completion, master's and doctoral classes and appears among the BSN to DNP locations. Our page on APU's regional campuses sorts out which programs run where.

The 27 incorporated cities counted here held about 1,227,525 people on January 1, 2026, per the California Department of Finance. Pasadena (141,145), West Covina (108,937) and El Monte (108,192) lead; Azusa has 48,549 and Monrovia 39,094. Unincorporated Altadena, Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights are not counted.

Living near campus is not the same as training near home. APU's 2023-24 guidelines weigh how well a site suits your level and patients above mileage, and they call an hour or two behind the wheel each way ordinary, so a clinic on your side of the valley is something you work toward.

Valley hospitals and what they publish about students

Five health systems shape hospital care here. Read the table as a picture of where valley patients go, not a roster of openings: none of these pages names APU, and a site counts only after APU's placement team clears it.

Kaiser calls its one-to-one arrangement an Individual Preceptorship Student, supervised by a Kaiser employee or provider. Since the school files the request, a Kaiser clinician open to teaching you is a name to pass to APU's placement team. 89 community health center sites, 21 organizations

HRSA's health center file, dated September 24, 2026, places 89 FQHC and look-alike sites across the valley's cities, run by 21 organizations. AltaMed Health Services and Garfield Health Center lead with 16 sites each, followed by Chinatown Service Center (9), East Valley Community Health Center and Central City Community Health Center (7 each) and Herald Christian Health Center (5).

Few of these clinics advertise a way in for students: when large FQHC networks such as AltaMed were checked, their public pages advertised residencies for NPs who had already graduated, or nothing at all for students. A yes usually starts with a personal connection, a coworker or a call to the office manager, the routes APU's request form lists when it asks how you found your placement.

For pediatric credit, APU counts pediatric clinics and family practices seeing six or more pediatric patients on a typical day, so ask about a clinic's patient mix before start dates; our page on the FNP pediatric rule has the detail.

The School of Nursing has its own roots here: it runs the Neighborhood Wellness Center jointly with the city of Azusa, and its students provide health services with the East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless.

Shortage designations around El Monte and La Puente

Two primary care service-area designations touch the valley. MSSA 78.2oo El Monte/Five Points is a high-needs geographic HPSA scored 10; LI-MSSA 78.2yyy Industry West-La Puente is a low-income population HPSA scored 4. Both carry the 'proposed for withdrawal' flag, meaning neither cleared HRSA's national review in September 2025; each keeps its standing until HRSA's final decision, due no later than July 1, 2027.

Clinic-level designations are more numerous. East Valley Community Health Center in West Covina, Herald Christian Health Center and Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation in El Monte, Garfield Health Center and Central City Community Health Center in Monterey Park, Northeast Community Clinic in Alhambra and TL Health Care Foundation in San Gabriel each hold a facility HPSA as an FQHC or look-alike.

A shortage designation flags a community with too few clinicians for its population. Clinics there need hands, and a preceptor will want to see that you arrive cleared, on schedule and ready to work.

Moving a valley preceptor through APU's process

Azusa-campus NP students follow the route below, whichever valley city they live in.

1. Get compliant in CastleBranchAzusa students use CastleBranch; Complio is San Diego's. The Fall 2026 deadline was August 1, 2026; our CastleBranch and Complio guide lists each item.
2. Find a preceptor who fits the courseAny MD, DO or NP can precept NP courses, as can a PA with a physician on site, and one semester must be with an NP. Clinicals at the valley hospital that employs you need a written division of labor and cannot be on your own unit.
3. Submit the Graduate Preceptor Request formAzusa and Inland Empire NP students share one form, PMHNP has its own, and each preceptor needs a separate submission; our request form guide explains the legal name and signer fields.
4. Give the affiliation agreement timeA clinic with no current APU agreement needs one first, and the 2023-24 guidelines ask for six to eight weeks' warning about any preceptor APU has not yet vetted.
5. Start after written clearanceNothing starts until the placement team approves the site in a written message, and hours from an unapproved clinic come out of Medatrax.
