Central Los Angeles and the Westside for APU nurse practitioner students

Where you live, and where APU is

This guide covers downtown, Hollywood, Koreatown, Boyle Heights, South Los Angeles, Westwood and Venice, plus unincorporated East Los Angeles and the cities of Santa Monica (94,237 residents), Culver City (40,730), West Hollywood (35,283) and Beverly Hills (32,116). The state's January 2026 figure of 3,806,201 for the City of Los Angeles also includes its Valley and Harbor neighborhoods, and no count exists for the central and Westside area alone.

APU's closest nursing classrooms are at the Monrovia Regional Site, about 15 straight-line miles from downtown, and on the Azusa main campus, about 20; APU calls Azusa 26 miles northeast of Los Angeles. Azusa is also one of the three campuses APU lists for its MSN with NP Specialties. Freeway miles run longer.

What the major medical centers publish

Many students look first at the academic and county systems, where rules are most formal. None of the pages summarized here names APU, and nothing below means a system has an agreement with APU.

• Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Westwood. UCLA Health's preceptorship process covers MSN-NP students, FNP and PMHNP among them, plus CNS and DNP students. Schools submit requests in set windows, nobody contacts the preceptor or goes on site before clearance, and UCLA asks students not to approach its staff as potential preceptors.
• Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Keck Hospital of USC. Neither site had a public page on outside NP-student placements.
• Children's Hospital Los Angeles, East Hollywood. CHLA posts an Advanced Practice Provider student rotations page; search excerpts mention a school agreement, CHLA's own request form and quarterly review, but a bot check blocked direct reading, so confirm those details yourself.
• LA General Medical Center, Boyle Heights. The county Department of Health Services runs it and publishes no page on outside NP students; HRSA lists LAC+USC Medical Center as an 'Other Facility' primary care HPSA.
• Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. Kaiser Permanente Southern California needs a current school affiliation agreement, and its one-to-one preceptorship requests come from the school's clinical coordinator.

311 clinic sites across 50 organizations

HRSA's file puts 311 health center service locations, federally qualified or look-alike, under a Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Culver City, West Hollywood or Beverly Hills site city, run by 50 organizations; some sit outside the core under a 'Los Angeles' mailing address. The largest are AltaMed Health Services (26 sites), JWCH Institute (24), St. John's Community Health (21), Northeast Valley Health Corporation (20), Via Care Community Health Center (15) and Venice Family Clinic (12). Countywide, HRSA counts 778 sites for 9,837,286 residents.

The pages checked for AltaMed, JWCH and Venice Family Clinic described residency programs for newly graduated NPs, or carried no student information. The conversation starts with one clinic's lead clinician or office manager.

South LA and Boyle Heights on the shortage map

Primary care HPSAs cluster south and east of downtown. MSSA 78.2k South Central Northwest (score 18) and MSSA 78.2mmm Downtown Southeast (17) are proposed for withdrawal; MSSA 78.2ggg South Central Northeast (8) and LI-MSSA 78.2s South Central Southwest (18) remain designated. Low-income HPSAs for Exposition Park/Leimert Park (12), City Terrace East (11) and Firestone/Florence South (10) are also proposed for withdrawal.

Mental health designations run deeper: Boyle Heights Central and Downtown Southeast each score 20, the three South Central areas hold high-needs designations, and Echo Park/Hollywood North Central and East Los Angeles have low-income ones. Most are proposed for withdrawal, HRSA's label for areas that did not pass its September 2025 update, and each keeps its designation until HRSA rules, a step the Federal Register sets for July 1, 2027 at the latest.

PMHNP students, who need a psychiatrist or PMHNP for most courses, will find the region's recorded mental health need concentrated here, and a preceptor will ask first whether you can hold a steady weekly schedule.

How an APU request moves from central Los Angeles

Because UCLA, Kaiser and the county route requests through schools, APU's Graduate Placement Team is your channel to them: respect UCLA's request not to approach staff, and pass an interested Kaiser clinician's name to the team. At independent practices and community clinics you make first contact yourself, then file a Graduate Preceptor Request form naming the clinic's registered name, the person who signs its contracts and its office manager.

Every site needs an APU affiliation agreement in place, and nobody reports to one before the placement team's written OK. A Westside practice new to APU needs lead time, at least the six to eight weeks APU's recent guidelines set aside for vetting someone new.
