Southeast Los Angeles County: NP clinicals in the Gateway Cities

Twenty-four cities, one short hop from APU

The Gateway Cities run from Montebello and Pico Rivera through Whittier, Downey, Norwalk, Bellflower, Cerritos and Lakewood to South Gate, Lynwood, Compton, Huntington Park, Bell Gardens and Paramount, with Santa Fe Springs and La Mirada as well. The 24 incorporated cities counted here held about 1,222,862 people on January 1, 2026, led by Downey (112,279), Norwalk (101,453), Compton (93,937), South Gate (93,467), Whittier (88,029) and Lakewood (80,585).

No APU campus sits in the region, but APU's nursing locations are within reach: the Monrovia site is roughly 10 to 15 straight-line miles from Whittier and Downey, and the Azusa campus about 15 to 20. Azusa doubles as one of APU's three NP campuses. Road miles run longer than those estimates.

APU's steps, from a Downey or Whittier address

APU's shared placement model expects you to locate a nearby site yourself and report it, with placement staff helping. With campus this close, it is tempting to wait for a site near APU, yet the Gateway Cities give you plenty of places to start in your own neighborhood.

2. Match the site to the coursePrimary care NP courses need a preceptor who is an MD, DO or NP, or a PA working with a physician on the premises, and APU's request form sends specialty clinics to faculty for approval.
3. Collect the clinic's contract detailsThe form wants three contract details: the organization's registered legal name, a signer with credentials, and whoever manages the office. After an ownership change, such as UCI Health's March 2024 purchase of the former Lakewood Regional Medical Center, the legal name may not be the one you remember.
4. File the request and let the agreement followSubmit one Graduate Preceptor Request form per preceptor; an organization without a current affiliation agreement needs one next.
5. Confirm, then wait for clearanceAPU's recent guidelines give you one week to confirm a placement offer, and the placement team's written clearance comes before your first day.

PIH Health, Kaiser Downey, Rancho Los Amigos and more

PIH Health runs hospitals in Whittier and Downey, and because its website turned away automated checks during research, how it handles students remains unconfirmed. Kaiser Permanente Downey Medical Center follows Kaiser Permanente Southern California's rules: a current school affiliation agreement for any placement, with requests made by the school's coordinator rather than the student.

Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Downey is a county-run rehabilitation hospital under the Department of Health Services, which publishes no page on outside NP students. GNRS 600 centers on outpatient primary care, so a rehabilitation setting would be a specialty placement needing faculty review before it could count.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital sits in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles, and UCI Health-Lakewood, formerly Lakewood Regional Medical Center, joined UCI Health in March 2024. None of these public pages names APU, so each is context for your search rather than a destination.

124 clinic sites and a dense shortage map

Gateway Cities addresses account for 124 active health center sites in HRSA's file, counting FQHCs and look-alikes, under 31 organizations. AltaMed Health Services accounts for 31, followed by JWCH Institute (12), South Central Family Health Center (7), Health Access For All and Family Health Care Centers of Greater Los Angeles (6 each) and Via Care Community Health Center (5).

Two Medicaid-eligible primary care HPSAs are designated, Bellflower/Paramount South (score 8) and Los Nietos/Santa Fe Springs Northeast (16). Four low-income ones are proposed for withdrawal: Paramount North/Willowbrook (17), Bell Northeast (16), Compton East (15) and Lynwood North Central (10). Clinic-level designations cover Tender Care Community Clinic in Downey, Cali Med in South Gate, Community Medicine Inc in Paramount, The R.O.A.D.S. Foundation and Aghaby in Compton, and BeverlyCare in Montebello.

Every mental health HPSA here is proposed for withdrawal, among them Bell Northeast (high-needs, 17), Bellflower (low-income, 15), Lynwood South/Paramount North (14), Compton East/North Long Beach (14) and Huntington Park (11). HRSA moved them to that status after the September 2025 national update, and they stay recognized until its final notice, due by July 1, 2027.

Behind those designations are clinics with more patients than clinicians, where a preceptor in Compton or Paramount says yes more easily to a student who arrives compliant, scheduled and clear about the course.
