The Valley's size and its distance from APU

The region takes in the Valley neighborhoods of the City of Los Angeles, from Van Nuys, North Hollywood and Panorama City to Sylmar, Northridge, Mission Hills and Woodland Hills, along with San Fernando, Burbank, Glendale, Calabasas and, to the north, Santa Clarita's Valencia, Newhall, Canyon Country and Saugus. The state's January 2026 estimates give Santa Clarita 232,883 residents, Glendale 193,286, Burbank 106,229, San Fernando 23,976 and Calabasas 22,763; the Valley neighborhoods sit inside the Los Angeles city total with no separate count.

No APU campus is here. APU's Monrovia site lies roughly 25 to 30 straight-line miles from Van Nuys and about 35 from Santa Clarita, and the Azusa campus about 30 to 40, with road miles longer still. APU's recent guidelines already expect one- to two-hour clinical commutes each way, so a Valley student who drives east for class should push for a site on this side of the hills.

Hospitals from Burbank to Valencia

Kaiser Permanente runs two medical centers here, in Panorama City and Woodland Hills. Under Kaiser Permanente Southern California's rules, every student placement starts with a current affiliation agreement with the school, and requests come from the school's clinical coordinator through its Nursing Pathways process rather than from the student.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Sylmar is a county hospital, and HRSA lists it as an 'Other Facility' primary care HPSA with a score of 11. The county Department of Health Services publishes no page about outside NP students, while the county's public health arm limits nurse preceptorships to universities under affiliation agreements.

Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills and Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center belong to systems with no Southern California NP-student page found; both sites blocked automated reading, so that is unverified. Adventist Health Glendale also serves the region, and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia blocked automated checks. None of these pages names APU.

132 clinic sites, from Pacoima to Valencia

HRSA counts 132 clinic locations, FQHCs and look-alikes combined, across the Valley's neighborhoods and cities, under 31 organizations. Northeast Valley Health Corporation leads with 21, followed by All For Health, Health For All (14), Center for Family Health & Education (9), SFV Health Center (8), and Tarzana Treatment Centers and Pediatric and Family Medical Foundation (7 each).

Several Valley FQHCs hold their own facility HPSA designation, among them Northeast Valley Health Corporation in San Fernando, Samuel Dixon Family Health Center in Valencia, El Proyecto del Barrio in Arleta and Mission City Community Network in North Hills. For a Santa Clarita student, Samuel Dixon's Valencia location is a designated clinic close to home.

In a multi-site network, ask about one site and one clinician at a time: APU's request form covers a single preceptor per submission and needs that clinic's legal name.

Where the Valley falls short on primary and mental health care

Three low-income primary care designations cover parts of the Valley. LI-MSSA 78.2ll San Fernando West (score 11) is designated, while North Hollywood Central (16) and Pacoima East/Sun Valley (17) are proposed for withdrawal.

On the mental health side, San Fernando West (17) and Glendale Southeast (18) carry low-income HPSAs, both proposed for withdrawal. The word 'proposed' matters: HRSA flagged these after its September 2025 review, but they stay recognized until it acts, with a deadline of July 1, 2027 set in the Federal Register.

A PMHNP student in Glendale or the northeast Valley is therefore training where HRSA has recorded a mental health shortage. APU's PMHNP courses need a psychiatrist or a PMHNP, with an LMFT or psychologist allowed only in GNRS 535; the PMHNP clinical courses page sets out the rest.

Getting a Valley site through APU

Once a Valley preceptor agrees, the Graduate Preceptor Request form goes in, one per preceptor, and APU's placement team takes it from there. If the clinic has no current affiliation agreement, that contract sets the pace, so start early: the vetting window in APU's recent guidelines is six to eight weeks before the term.
