Lancaster, Palmdale and the Antelope Valley: finding an APU preceptor

The Antelope Valley centers on Lancaster, with 178,159 residents, and Palmdale, with 166,118, for a combined 344,277 on January 1, 2026. Unincorporated Lake Los Angeles, Quartz Hill, Littlerock and Acton surround them and are not counted separately.

No APU campus is here. By straight line, APU's Monrovia site is about 30 miles from Palmdale and 40 from Lancaster, and the Azusa campus about 35 to 40, on the far side of the San Gabriel Mountains; roads add more. APU's High Desert Regional Campus in Victorville, about 45 to 50 miles east, lists nursing, but APU's MSN with NP Specialties is offered only on the Azusa, Inland Empire and San Diego campuses.

Because MSN APRN students must live in Southern California and train near home, a valley NP student is weighing a local site against a long drive south. APU's recent guidelines already assume long clinical drives, up to an hour or two in each direction, so a Palmdale or Lancaster placement is worth the extra effort to secure.

Two hospitals and a county health center

Antelope Valley Medical Center, the Lancaster hospital, kept automated tools out of its website during research, which leaves its student policy unconfirmed. Palmdale Regional Medical Center, part of Southwest Healthcare, is the Palmdale hospital, and its student policies were not among the public sources checked, so ask the hospital directly.

High Desert Regional Health Center in Lancaster is a Los Angeles County outpatient center serving the valley, with urgent care and specialty clinics. The county Department of Health Services publishes nothing on hosting outside NP students, and the public health department next door arranges nurse preceptorships only with universities that hold signed agreements.

None of these pages mentions APU, and with so few systems here, raise any agreement question with APU's placement team as soon as a lead appears.

21 clinic sites, four organizations

Only 21 health center locations, FQHC or look-alike, appear in HRSA's file for Lancaster, Palmdale and the communities around them, and just four organizations run them: Bartz-Altadonna Community Health Center (9), JWCH Institute (6), Northeast Valley Health Corporation (3) and Tarzana Treatment Centers (3).

Three of the four also run sites elsewhere in Los Angeles County: JWCH Institute in central Los Angeles and the Gateway Cities, and Northeast Valley Health Corporation and Tarzana Treatment Centers in the San Fernando Valley. Bartz-Altadonna, the valley's largest, is the natural first call for a Lancaster or Palmdale student.

That concentration cuts both ways. Fewer organizations mean fewer doors, but one good relationship can reach several sites. APU's request form covers one preceptor at a time and names each clinic by its legal name, so a second preceptor at another Bartz-Altadonna location means a second form, even inside the same organization.

Shortage scores in the high desert

MSSA 77.1a Palmdale Central is a designated geographic primary care HPSA with a score of 13, updated September 4, 2026. Lake Los Angeles (geographic, 17), Juniper Hills (geographic, 16) and Lancaster Central/Palmdale North Central (high-needs geographic, 10) are proposed for withdrawal.

Bartz-Altadonna Community Health Center holds a designated FQHC facility HPSA scored 21, the highest score in this region's data. For mental health, Lancaster/Palmdale (geographic, 12) and Acton (high-needs, 11) are both proposed for withdrawal, HRSA's term for designations that failed its September 2025 update; they stay recognized until HRSA rules, no later than July 1, 2027.

The clinics that most need hands also have the fewest clinicians to spare for teaching. A preceptor here will want a student who is fully compliant, available on weekdays and committed for the whole term.

Running APU's process from Lancaster or Palmdale

Before you commit to an Antelope Valley site

• Confirm the preceptor fits your course: an MD, DO or NP qualifies for NP courses, and so does a PA with a supervising physician on site, while PMHNP courses call for a psychiatrist or PMHNP. See preceptor requirements.
• Collect three details for the Graduate Preceptor Request form: the practice's exact legal name, who signs contracts there, and the office manager's contact.
• Ask whether the organization has worked with APU before, so the placement team knows whether an affiliation agreement must be started.
• Check the weekday schedule, since family practices in particular seldom offer Saturday or evening clinical time, according to APU's recent guidelines.
• Hold off on day one until the placement team's written clearance arrives.
