The county counted 824,306 residents on January 1, 2026. Oxnard is the largest city at 198,557, then Simi Valley (123,842), Thousand Oaks (121,286), Ventura (108,061) and Camarillo (68,764), with Moorpark, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ojai and Port Hueneme filling in the rest.
APU has no campus in the county. It holds nursing classes closest to you at the Monrovia site and the Azusa main campus, about 50 to 55 straight-line miles from Thousand Oaks and 70 to 75 from Oxnard; real drives run longer. Two networks run the county's health centers
HRSA's September 2026 file lists 55 active FQHC service sites in Ventura County, and just two organizations operate them: Clinicas del Camino Real with 35 sites and the County of Ventura with 20. Los Angeles County, by contrast, spreads 778 sites across 86 organizations.
That concentration shapes the search. APU signs its affiliation agreement with the organization, so for any health-center placement in this county, the legal name on your request would be one of these two. Neither organization's student process appears in public sources used for this guide, which makes APU's placement team the right first call on whether an agreement already exists. Both also show up in HRSA's shortage data as facility HPSAs, a point the shortage section below takes up.

With so little published, the useful question for any of these hospitals is whether it already holds an APU agreement, and only APU's placement team can answer it.
Light on primary care designations, heavier on mental health
Ventura County stands out in HRSA's data: it has no geographic or population primary care HPSAs. Its only two primary care designations are the facility HPSAs for Clinicas del Camino Real and the County of Ventura, each scored 18.
Mental health looks different. LI-MSSA 241a/b, covering Oxnard South and North, is a low-income mental health HPSA, designated with a score of 16 and refreshed on September 15, 2026. Santa Paula's geographic designation (11) is proposed for withdrawal yet remains in force pending HRSA's ruling, due by July 1, 2027.
For PMHNP students, Oxnard is where the documented need sits. APU's PMHNP clinical courses call for a psychiatrist or PMHNP preceptor, with a licensed therapist or psychologist allowed only in GNRS 535.
APU's process at a distance from campus

Because APU puts a strong clinical match before proximity, a site over the county line in the San Fernando Valley can come into play for students in the Conejo Valley or Simi Valley.

Between them they run all 55 FQHC sites in the county, so they are central to local primary care. A placement at either one depends on a contract between APU and that organization, then on APU's written sign-off.
Is there a mental health shortage area in Ventura County?
