San Diego is one of the few regions in these guides with its own Azusa Pacific University (APU) nursing campus, in Mission Valley. Two things set it apart: San Diego students track clinical compliance in Complio rather than CastleBranch, and the county's big health systems publish detailed rules for students.

APU's San Diego Regional Campus sits at 5353 Mission Center Road in Mission Valley, and APU lists San Diego alongside Azusa and the Inland Empire for its MSN with Nurse Practitioner Specialties. The ten cities covered here (San Diego, Chula Vista, National City, Imperial Beach, Coronado, El Cajon, La Mesa, Lemon Grove, Santee and Poway) held about 2,116,040 people on January 1, 2026.

None of these six systems' public pages names APU, so read the table as a map of the landscape, not a list of hosts.

Community clinics and pediatric options
Across the ten cities, HRSA data dated September 24, 2026 counts 167 active FQHC service sites run by 12 organizations: Family Health Centers of San Diego has 57, Centro de Salud de la Comunidad de San Ysidro 44, La Maestra Family Clinic 30, Operation Samahan 11, San Diego Family Care 8 and Neighborhood Healthcare 5.
Few publish a student route. Imperial Beach Community Clinic invites NP students to apply to it directly for rotations, while Family Health Centers of San Diego posts post-graduate NP residencies instead. Any clinic that says yes still needs an APU affiliation agreement.
Family NP students also need children on the schedule: APU counts a family practice for pediatric time when at least six of its daily patients are children, so busy family practices matter as much as Rady Children's here.
Shortage areas from City Heights to Campo
Designated Medicaid-eligible population HPSAs cover Campo (score 17), El Cajon Central and South with Fletcher Hills (13), Chollas Creek, City Heights and East San Diego (10), and Lemon Grove South (10). Lemon Grove Northwest with National City East, and San Diego County Estates, are proposed for withdrawal.
Many clinics hold facility designations of their own: Family Health Centers of San Diego, San Ysidro, La Maestra, Imperial Beach Community Clinic and St. Vincent de Paul Village, scored 20, plus tribal sites at Sycuan, Southern Indian Health Council and Campo. A preceptor at a designated clinic teaches on top of a full schedule, so arriving with Complio current and your course objectives written out makes a yes easier.
For mental health, Campo holds a designated high-needs HPSA (13). Low-income HPSAs for Golden Hill and Logan Heights, El Cajon Central and South, Imperial Beach, National City, Chollas Creek and La Mesa, and Encanto are proposed for withdrawal, a status that still counts until HRSA settles it, no later than July 1, 2027.

Questions APU students ask
Do APU San Diego nurse practitioner students use Complio or CastleBranch?
Complio. The School of Nursing points its San Diego campus to Complio, American DataBank's tracker, and every other campus to CastleBranch. The subscription is yours to buy and to keep active through the program. Scripps and Sharp use Complio for their own student requirements, a step separate from APU clearing the site.
Can an APU student train at UC San Diego Health?
UC San Diego Health's nursing-student page says it is considering new nursing affiliations only for its own employees and for specialty areas of need. The school's coordinator, not the student, submits the request, and a decision comes within 30 days. If you work there, raise it with APU's Graduate Placement Team early and keep a backup site in play.
Where is the San Diego NP Graduate Preceptor Request form?
On the 2026-27 advanced practice onboarding page, the San Diego NP form was marked coming soon. Check the SON student hub for a current link and ask the Graduate Placement Team how to submit meanwhile. Expect to supply your preceptor's details plus the clinic's formal business name, who signs for it and who runs its front office.
Can I take the PMHNP track at APU's San Diego campus?
APU's sources disagree. The MSN with NP Specialties page lists San Diego for all four specialties, PMHNP included, but APU's PMHNP certificate page, like its 2023-24 guidelines, names only Azusa and the Inland Empire for the psychiatric specialty courses. Ask APU admissions or your advisor which applies to your cohort before you plan clinicals around it.
