Orange County clinical sites for APU nurse practitioner students

The Orange County Regional Campus is at 1915 Orangewood Ave. in Orange. APU lists business, education, leadership and psychology programs there and keeps a smaller physical library collection on site, but no nursing. Nursing classes meet elsewhere: the closest APU locations for them are Azusa and Monrovia, about 25 to 35 straight-line miles from Santa Ana and Irvine, and the MSN with NP specialties runs at Azusa, San Diego and the Inland Empire.

Anaheim (340,433 residents on January 1, 2026), Irvine (317,744) and Santa Ana (312,808) are the three largest cities, followed by Huntington Beach (191,498), Garden Grove (171,077) and Orange (141,063). APU also expects clinicals close to home, and its MSN APRN programs take only Southern California residents.

What the county's large systems publish

None of the pages below names APU, and nothing here means a system holds an agreement with APU.

Children, families and women's health

CHOC is the county's children's hospital, now part of Rady Children's Health, and the obvious first thought for pediatric NP students. Since no public page about outside NP students turned up for CHOC, community pediatric practices matter just as much. APU's request form accepts a pediatric clinic for these courses, and so does a family practice whose daily caseload includes six or more children.

For women's health, the form points to OB/GYN clinics and to family practices with a daily women's health caseload of at least six. Any specialty clinic needs a faculty sign-off first. The PNP-PC program page lays out the pediatric course sequence.

162 health center sites, 108 of them permanent

HRSA lists 162 active FQHC or look-alike service sites in Orange County, run by 27 organizations. Only 108 are permanent; the other 54 are mobile or seasonal. AltaMed Health Services runs the most, 47, followed by Families Together of Orange County (12), Central City Community Health Center (11), and Serve the People, St. Jude Neighborhood Health Centers and Hurtt Family Health Clinic with ten each.

AltaMed, the largest, advertises NP residencies for graduates rather than rotations for students. And a mobile or seasonal site may not offer the steady weekly schedule a clinical course needs, so confirm a clinic is a permanent location before you plan around it. Anaheim and Santa Ana: where the shortages are

Orange County has no geographic primary care shortage areas and only four population designations. Two are designated, both Medicaid-eligible: Anaheim West (score 12) and Anaheim East/City of Orange North/Placentia (13). Two low-income areas, Santa Ana South and Garden Grove North, each scored 13, are proposed for withdrawal.

The county's 18 other primary care designations belong to health center facilities, such as UC Irvine's FQHC in Irvine, Serve the People in Santa Ana and St. Jude Neighborhood Health Centers in Fullerton. For mental health, the low-income Anaheim Central and Santa Ana Central areas, each scored 16, are proposed for withdrawal too.

Running APU's process from an Orange County address

APU's steps do not change at the county line. Each preceptor gets its own Graduate Preceptor Request form, the site's organization needs its own APU affiliation agreement, and your first day waits on the placement team's written clearance. A large Orange County system may run its own onboarding on top, so raise that question the day a preceptor agrees.

APU's recent guidelines treat an hour or two of driving each way as an acceptable trade when a site fits your course and population better. From north county that range reaches into Southeast Los Angeles County, and from south county toward north San Diego County, both worth a look.
