North County NP clinicals for APU students: Oceanside, Escondido, Carlsbad and Vista

Eight cities, two unincorporated towns and no local campus

This guide covers Oceanside, Escondido, Carlsbad, Vista, San Marcos, Encinitas, Solana Beach and Del Mar, plus the unincorporated communities of Fallbrook and Valley Center. The state's January 2026 estimates put the eight cities at about 720,060 people: Oceanside 174,027, Escondido 152,196, Carlsbad 115,867, Vista 101,365 and San Marcos 97,554, with Encinitas at 62,193.

APU's Murrieta Regional Campus, about 30 miles north, does not list nursing, so North County NP students belong to a campus farther away. APU assigns that campus at admission, and its recent guidelines say transfers are generally not allowed. Hospitals from Oceanside to Encinitas

Here is what public sources say about the student process at each of North County's four hospital systems; none mentions APU or promises you a spot.

• Tri-City Medical Center, Oceanside. No public NP-student process appears in the research behind this guide, so APU's placement team is the place to ask.
• Palomar Health, Escondido. Palomar's website turned away automated checks while this guide was researched, leaving its student rules unconfirmed.
• Kaiser Permanente San Marcos Medical Center. Kaiser's Southern California region accepts students only under a current school affiliation agreement. The school's clinical coordinator files requests for one-to-one preceptorships via Kaiser's Nursing Pathways route, and a 2022 FAQ asks for three months' lead time or more.
• Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas. Scripps posts its student rules at the system level: a current affiliation agreement (six to eight weeks to set up), requests through Complio, and most graduate students expected to identify their own preceptor.

Community health centers across North County

North County communities hold 91 active FQHC service sites in HRSA's September 2026 data, run by eight organizations. Neighborhood Healthcare leads with 35, then North County Health Project with 26, Vista Community Clinic 15, Family Health Centers of San Diego 5, DAP Health 4 and Community Health Systems, Inc. 3. The top three, Neighborhood Healthcare, North County Health Project and Vista Community Clinic, run 76 of the 91 sites between them.

One of these publishes a student door. Neighborhood Healthcare's internship interest form lists family nurse practitioner and nursing students among the people it hears from. That form is the clinic's intake, not APU's: if the clinic says yes, you still file APU's request and wait for the affiliation agreement and written clearance.

Shortage designations from Pala to Borrego Springs

North County's primary care designations attach mostly to clinics and tribal health sites rather than neighborhoods. HRSA lists facility HPSAs for Neighborhood Healthcare in Escondido (score 19), Vista Community Clinic (16) and North County Health Project in San Marcos (12), along with Indian Health Council in Valley Center and Santa Ysabel Community Health Center. The only service-area designation, MSSA 153.1 Pala (geographic, rural, 15), is proposed for withdrawal.

Mental health follows the same shape. Borrego Springs holds a designated geographic HPSA (14). Escondido Central and South (low-income, 17) is proposed for withdrawal, though it still counts while HRSA decides, a ruling due by July 1, 2027. PMHNP students need a psychiatrist or PMHNP for most of their sequence; see who can precept APU students.

Providers at a designated clinic carry heavy panels, so a request that arrives with compliance done and course objectives spelled out is easier to accept.

Running APU's process from North County

APU puts a strong clinical match ahead of a short drive, and its recent guidelines treat 60 to 120 minutes each way as a normal commute. For an Oceanside or Fallbrook student, a well-fitted site might sit in central San Diego rather than down the street, and weekday availability helps, since Saturday and evening family practice slots are scarce.

If you line up your own preceptor, the Graduate Preceptor Request form wants the clinic's registered name, whoever can sign contracts for it and its office manager, on a separate form for each preceptor. Flag anyone new to APU a good six to eight weeks before term.
