Kern County and Bakersfield: finding NP clinicals as an APU student

First, the residence rule and the distance

Under APU's catalog, only Southern California residents may enter the MSN APRN tracks, and its BSN-to-DNP page wants NP-track students within reach of a Southern California regional center. If home is Kern County, have APU admissions confirm that your address meets the rule before you plan clinicals around it; our residence and license page explains the requirement.

Distance comes next. Monrovia and Azusa, where APU's closest nursing classes meet, lie more than 100 straight-line miles from Bakersfield, while APU's High Desert Regional Campus in Victorville sits about 110 away. Road miles run higher. Unless your campus is San Diego, your compliance account is CastleBranch.

Kern had 927,328 residents on January 1, 2026. Bakersfield held 422,853, followed by Delano (52,384), Ridgecrest (28,638), Wasco (25,806) and Shafter (24,545), while 306,121 people lived in unincorporated areas.

Where Kern's shortage designations fall

Designated primary care service-area HPSAs reach nearly every corner of the county:

• Bakersfield East (geographic, score 17, updated September 4, 2026) and Bakersfield Northeast/Oildale (low-income, 18)
• Bakersfield Southwest (Medicaid-eligible, 16) and Shafter (high-needs, 16)
• Lost Hills/Wasco (16), Delano/McFarland (15), Tehachapi (15), Lake Isabella (15) and Ridgecrest (14)
• Proposed for withdrawal but still active until HRSA's decision, due by July 1, 2027: Arvin, Taft, Boron/California City and Fort Tejon

Mental health designations spread just as wide: Bakersfield (low-income, 17), Shafter/Lost Hills/Wasco (geographic, 17), Tehachapi/Kernville/Ridgecrest (high-needs, 17) and Boron/Rosamond (high-needs, 18). The Board of Registered Nursing's 2026 sunset report adds that in rural areas, clinical sites and preceptors are often in short supply, which is the training side of the same shortage.

Health centers and rural clinics

Seventy-two FQHC and look-alike service sites operate in Kern under seven organizations, by HRSA's count. Omni Family Health operates 36, Clinica Sierra Vista 24, the Kern County Hospital Authority 7 and Family Healthcare Network 2. HRSA also counts 13 rural health clinic facility HPSAs in the county. The Kern County Hospital Authority appears on two lists at once, as the operator of Kern Medical and as one of the seven FQHC organizations.

For FNP and AGPCNP students, Omni and Clinica Sierra Vista are the largest names in local primary care, with 60 of the 72 sites between them. Neither names APU in public sources, and a placement with either would rest on an APU affiliation agreement signed at the organization level.

Bakersfield's hospitals

All four hospitals named in our regional data sit in Bakersfield itself.

• Kern Medical, run by the Kern County Hospital Authority, which HRSA also lists as an FQHC organization. Its website turned away automated checks in late September 2026.
• Adventist Health Bakersfield, with no public NP-student process in the research behind this guide.
• Dignity Health Memorial Hospital and Dignity Health Mercy Hospital Downtown. Research found no Southern California NP-student placement page for Dignity Health, and its sites resisted automated reading, so student rules for these Bakersfield hospitals are unconfirmed.

APU's steps when home is Kern County

APU's process is identical everywhere, but distance raises the stakes on each step. Each preceptor needs a Graduate Preceptor Request form listing the practice's legal name, its authorized signer and its office manager, and nobody reports to a Kern site until the placement team has cleared it in writing.

APU's recent guidelines want a new preceptor put forward six to eight weeks ahead of the term, and they describe clinical drives of up to a couple of hours each way as common. From Bakersfield, even the nearest campus is over 100 miles off, so a local preceptor found early matters more here than in most of Southern California.
