No placement at APU: the first-third drop rule and what follows

What APU's guidelines say about no placement

APU runs a shared placement model for its MSN nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist tracks and the matching certificates. Placement staff help and the school weighs distance, but its guidelines also expect you to find a site near home and report it, and they state that a clinical placement is not promised. The drop rule is the backstop for a term when neither route produces a site.

The rule has three parts. If no placement is found, you must start the drop by the end of the first third of the semester. If you do not drop, you fail both the clinical course and its didactic course. And if the reason was outside your control, late-drop fees can be waived and you receive priority placement the following semester.

All three points appear in APU's MSN Advanced Practice Guidelines for 2023-24. The current edition sits behind APU's login, and the student hub file labeled 2025-26 is in fact the 2023-24 edition, so confirm the wording that applies to you with your advisor or the Graduate Placement Team.

Where the first third falls on APU's calendar

The guidelines state the deadline as a share of the semester rather than a date, so it moves with your session. APU's published graduate calendar gives the session dates below. The right-hand column is plain arithmetic to help you picture the window; it is not an APU deadline, and the registrar's drop dates and your advisor govern.

Check which session your clinical section uses. On an 8-week session the window is under three weeks, which leaves almost no room for a search that begins after the term starts. A site found after classes start still needs APU's written clearance before you log hours, so the real window is shorter than the arithmetic suggests.

When APU waives late-drop fees

APU's guidelines name two situations in which late-drop fees can be waived, each paired with priority placement the next semester: no placement was found, or a preceptor withdrew for reasons unrelated to you. Both describe a problem you did not cause, which is the thread running through the whole waiver.

Priority placement gives you a head start with APU's placement staff for the following term. The guidelines do not describe it as a named site or a set start date, and you still need current compliance and a ready request form. Keep your own search running alongside it so the priority has something to work with.

When APU gives no waiver

APU's guidelines also list the situations that rule the waiver out. Each one is within a student's control, which makes the list worth reading before the term starts rather than after.

• You were dismissed from a site for unsafe or unprofessional conduct.
• You refused a placement APU offered.
• You missed a document deadline, such as your term's CastleBranch or Complio date.
• You did not confirm a placement offer within one week.
• You left a site without giving faculty a chance to resolve the problem.

Drop, incomplete or failing grade

Three outcomes sit close together in APU's rules, and timing decides which one applies. The table sets them side by side.

The failing grade is the costly one. It wipes out that course's hours, and APU's graduate policy allows a course to be taken up to three times, with programs able to set a lower limit; see our grades and probation page. Because APU requires didactic and clinical courses to run together, ask your advisor how the drop affects the paired lecture course before you file it.

What a dropped term does to your plan

A drop moves clinical hours, not just one course. MSN FNP and AGPCNP students need 540 hours across 12 units of GNRS 600, which students take in blocks of 2 to 6 units per term once faculty approve. Losing a term pushes those hours into fewer remaining terms, and APU's guidelines say extra clinical units need director or chair approval because preceptors and placement resources are shared.

Other tracks feel it differently. PMHNP students move through four population courses in order, GNRS 535 to GNRS 538, each needing a suitable psychiatric preceptor, so one missed course can delay the next. Update your program plan with your advisor right away, since APU's guidelines say students without a plan are not counted for clinical placement. Getting ahead of the deadline
