How far the valley sits from APU

No APU campus is in the Coachella Valley. The closest campus with nursing is the San Bernardino location APU calls its Inland Empire Regional Campus; APU's Murrieta campus is a little nearer Palm Springs but lists no nursing programs.

About 380,000 people lived in the valley's nine incorporated cities on January 1, 2026. Indio is the largest at 92,360, followed by Palm Desert (52,326), Cathedral City (51,458), Coachella (45,300), Palm Springs (43,893), La Quinta (38,815) and Desert Hot Springs (33,629), with Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells smaller still. Thermal and Mecca are unincorporated, and the whole valley lies inside Riverside County.

Eisenhower and the Desert Care Network

Three hospitals are listed for the valley. Eisenhower Health is based in Rancho Mirage. Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs and JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio both belong to the Desert Care Network.

None of the three shows an NP-student request page in our sources, so the opening question for each is the same: does the organization already hold an affiliation agreement with APU, or would a new one be needed? Put it to APU's Graduate Placement Team before you approach a unit. In the Southern California systems that do describe their process, the school agreement comes first, and several want the request to come from the school, not the student.

With three listed hospitals, acute and specialty options are narrower, which makes the valley's outpatient network the main field for primary care students.

DAP Health and the valley's health centers

HRSA's data puts 31 active health center sites, counting FQHCs and look-alikes, in Coachella Valley communities, run by seven organizations. DAP Health runs 19 of them; the County of Riverside, SAC Health System and Clinicas de Salud del Pueblo run three each.

DAP Health is also a designated facility shortage site in Palm Springs, with an HRSA score of 19, and two tribal sites hold facility designations too: the Agua Caliente Outreach Office in Palm Springs and the Torres-Martinez Health Clinic in Thermal.

AB 890 created the 103 NP, who works without standardized procedures in group settings such as clinics, and the 104 NP, who may practice independently and is recognized from 2026. APU's own rules still govern your placement: your preceptor can be a physician, an NP, or a physician assistant working with an on-site physician, and one semester or more must be spent with an NP. Shortage designations from Palm Springs to Mecca

Every area-wide shortage designation listed for the valley is on HRSA's proposed-withdrawal list. For primary care, that covers the low-income Indio North area (score 15) and Agua Caliente/Palm Springs Central (14). For mental health, it covers MSSA 128, a geographic area spanning Arabia, Coachella, Desert Beach, Flowing Wells and Indio (15), the low-income Palm Springs/Cathedral City area (18) and Indio North (16).

Proposed for withdrawal does not mean withdrawn. These areas did not pass HRSA's September 2025 national update, yet they remain recognized until HRSA publishes its decision, due by July 1, 2027. The facility designations for DAP Health and the two tribal sites are not on that list.

The Palm Springs/Cathedral City mental health score of 18 is a signal for PMHNP students: psychiatric care is stretched here, so start early and search the whole valley.

Making APU's process work from the desert

Distance compounds over a program. The MSN FNP's GNRS 600 totals 540 clinical hours, 135 of them pediatric, and APU's recent guidelines report that Saturday and evening clinical time is in short supply, above all in family medicine. A preceptor in Palm Desert or Indio turns those weekday shifts into short drives instead of long ones west. The MSN FNP page has the full course plan.

The same guidelines put fit ahead of distance and regard a drive of up to two hours each way as ordinary, so a strong fit elsewhere in Riverside County is fair game. On the Graduate Preceptor Request form, list your campus and valley city, and copy the clinic's legal name and legal signer exactly, since the affiliation agreement is written from them. Then wait for written clearance before your first shift.
